A 5-year-old girl was killed when a van struck her at an intersection in Northeast Washington on Monday evening, D.C. police said.

The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. at 14th and Irving streets NE, said Brianna Burch, a police spokeswoman.

The girl was riding a bicycle, Burch said.

The circumstances of the incident were not immediately known, and police were investigating.

The child was not identified in preliminary accounts. A photograph from the scene suggested that the crash may have occurred in or near a crosswalk.

The van that struck the girl remained at the scene, Burch said.

The intersection is in the Brookland neighborhood and is about three blocks north of Rhode Island Avenue NE. A church is on one corner and a playground is on another.
