A 15-year-old youth was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon in Congress Heights.

The young man, a student at Ballou High School in Southeast Washington, died shortly after being taken to the hospital just after 4 p.m. with serious injuries, police spokesman Hugh Carew said.

It was not immediately clear what spurred the shooting, but police said they believe the incident stemmed from a fight at Ballou High School.

D.C. police are looking for three suspects. Two were described as men wearing tan pants, one had on a white polo shirt and the other was not wearing a shirt, police said. They did not provide a description of the third suspect.

Police had cordoned off an area in the 3100 block of Randle Place SE, in between Alabama Avenue SE and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE, as officers investigated the shooting.
