A man was hit and critically injured by a car on Baltimore Avenue in College Park early Saturday, and Prince George’s County police were still searching for the car and its driver.

The victim was identified only as an adult male who is not a student of the nearby University of Maryland, Cpl. Lamar Robinson said. The victim was taken to a hospital with unspecified serious injuries.

The incident happened about 5:50 a.m. near the intersection of Baltimore Avenue, also known as Route 1, and Berwyn House Road, just north of the university campus. The victim was in the crosswalk, Robinson said. The driver fled, and police did not release information on what type of vehicle might have been involved.

Route 1 was closed in both directions as police investigated the hit-and-run. Police asked anyone with information to call Prince George’s County Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS (8477).
