A man is dead after three vehicles collided Tuesday morning in a crash that police said was caused by a deer on Ritchie Marlboro Road in the Largo, Md., area.

Prince George’s County police did not immediately release the man’s name, pending the notification of his family. He was pronounced dead on the scene and two other people were taken to hospitals with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Police investigators confirmed the crash, which occurred just before 6 a.m., was caused by a deer jumping into the road or making contact with one of the vehicles, according to Corporal Harry Bond, a police spokesman. The road is one lane in each direction and is flanked by woods. Officials found a dead deer near the scene of the accident, Bond said.

The road was closed between Brown and Westphalia roads for several hours.
