Arlington County police are investigating the death of an inmate who was found unconscious in a medical cell at a detention facility early Saturday, officials said.
Edward Straughn was pronounced dead at Virginia Hospital Center about 7:38 a.m. after he was found unresponsive in the cell located near a nursing station at the detention center. Nurses and deputies tried to resuscitate the 53-year-old before he was taken to the hospital, according to a statement released Saturday.
County officials said Straughn had a history of medical problems and was placed in the special cell about 12 hours earlier to serve out a sentence from a trespassing conviction.
When he arrived late Friday, nurses conducted a medical check on Straughn and his vital signs were normal, said Susie Doyle, a spokeswoman for the county government.
The Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy as part of the investigation.
Straughn is the second detainee to die at the detention facility this year. The first, 48-year-old Anthony Gordon, also suffered from health problems and died in August.
