A man was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon near a public library in the Anacostia neighborhood of Southeast Washington, D.C. police said.

Police were called to the 1800 U Place SE, about a half block behind the Anacostia Neighborhood Library, for the report of a shooting about 4 p.m., said Officer Hugh Carew, a police spokesman. The victim was found semi-conscious and breathing and authorities took him to a hospital in critical condition.

Several hours later, police said he died of his wounds.

Police did not release information about a possible assailant or a motive.
