The body of a man was found Tuesday night inside a burning sport-utility vehicle in Northeast Washington that matches the description of a vehicle used by an 81-year-old man reported missing earlier in the day in Maryland, according to authorities.

D.C. police would not name the victim, saying they were awaiting forensic tests to confirm his identity. Police said the man's relatives had been notified, however.

Maryland State Police referred questions about the body to the District. But they cancelled the missing person alert issued Tuesday for Ernest C. Tolley of Calvert County, saying his 2013 Toyota Highlander had been located.

Police and firefighters found the Toyota about 11:30 p.m. on railroad tracks east of Route 295 at Benning Road. A police report says the vehicle was on fire and a man was found inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the fire was under investigation Wednesday. A D.C. police spokesman said foul play is not suspected.
