A 22-year-old who was shot near her home in Northeast Washington on July 4 died Wednesday, according to D.C. police.

The victim has been identified as Deeniqua Dodds, 22, who was known in her neighborhood as Dee Dee. She lived with her aunt Joeann Lewis, 56, in Clay Terrace, a few streets from where she was shot.

Police said they have no motive or suspects in the shooting, which occurred shortly before 3 a.m. in the 200 block of Division Avenue NE. Dodds was taken to a hospital in Prince George’s County, Md., and placed on life support, which was removed Wednesday, her family said.

“She was a beautiful person and we don’t understand why this happened,” said Lewis, who raised her niece since birth and said Dodds had always wanted to be a model. “She loved to be around her family.”

D.C. police used two names to identify Dodds in a statement announcing her death: Gregory and Deeniqua. Lewis said Dodds was a transgender woman.
