D.C. police are investigating a shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon about four blocks north of the Columbia Heights Metro Station in Northwest Washington.

The shooting occurred about 4:15 p.m. in the 3400 block of 14th Street NW, a street lined with rowhouses, businesses and a new luxury apartment building.

D.C. Police Officer Sean Hickman, a spokesman, said the victim was a man who was conscious and breathing at the scene. A fire department spokesman said the victim was transported in critical condition.

Few details were immediately available but police said on Twitter they were looking for two black men, one with a light complexion and hair in the style of long red dreadlocks. He was carrying a weapon, police said. The other man was described as wearing a ski mask and riding a bicycle.

A police official said the victim was found in the lobby of the apartment building but it was not clear if the shooting took place there or on the street outside. A person who answered the phone at the apartment complex declined to comment.
