A man was stabbed inside the D.C. jail Saturday afternoon and was taken to a hospital with life-threatening wounds, according to D.C. police.

Police were summoned to the jail at 12:10 p.m. for the stabbing, Officer Hugh Carew said. The man was stabbed in the neck with a metal object, according to a police report released Sunday.

The incident took place near showers. Jail officials said in a statement the jail is investigating the incident, along with police.

The police violent crimes branch was dispatched to investigate, and there was no information on whether a suspect had been identified.
