A man tried to sexually assault a woman over the weekend as she walked home from a shopping center in Sterling, Va.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday as she was walking home from the area of Waterview Plaza near Alberta and Edwards terraces near Route 7.

A man, who the woman didn't know, started to follow her and tried to talk to her. At one point, he walked in front of her and pushed her to the ground, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

Police said "a struggle ensued and the woman punched the suspect." It was not known where she hit him.

She was then able to flee and get home where she called police. Authorities said she was not physically hurt in the attempted assault.

The man is described as having dark skin and is believed to possibly be Hispanic. He was wearing a dark shirt and pants at the time of the incident.
