Two people were fatally shot in Washington on Sunday in separate incidents, one in Northwest and one in Northeast, police said.

In the first fatal shooting, a man was killed about 2 a.m. in the 4800 block of Kansas Avenue NW, police said. A second victim was critically wounded in that incident, police said.

The site is a residential block just north of Sherman Circle NW.

Sunday’s second fatal shooting occurred about 3 p.m. in the 4400 block of Quarles Street NE, police said. The victim was male, police said, but no age was given. The site is near the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and an apartment house development, just south of the border with Maryland.

In addition, at least four other shootings were reported in a 24-hour period that began late Sunday. A total of at least five people were wounded in those shootings. They brought the number of people killed or wounded in the District over the period to at least eight.

In the first shooting of the period, two men were wounded by gunfire in the 2600 block of 15th Street about 9:40 p.m. Saturday.

Then about a half hour later on Saturday night, a wounded man was found on Anacostia Road SE, and police said they thought he was shot in the 3500 block of Minnesota Avenue SE.

Shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, a man went to a firehouse with a gunshot wound. Police said they thought he was shot at a block party in the 1500 block of 45th Street NE. Another shooting was reported about 8 p.m. in the 3500 block of Clay Place NE, police said.

“Very disheartened with the senseless shootings overnight, including a homicide on Kansas Avenue NW,” D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham tweeted Sunday before the second fatal shooting was reported. “Help us prevent more from happening.”
