A person was struck and killed by a vehicle in downtown Washington on Friday, police said.

About 5:15 a.m., a sedan traveling north in the 1400 block of North Capitol Street struck a person walking east across the road in the middle of the block, D.C. police said in a statement.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at a hospital, the statement said. The driver of the car stayed on the scene.

The name of the victim was not released pending family notification, police said.
