D.C. police said a pedestrian was struck and killed Wednesday night in a hit-and-run in Southeast Washington.

Police identified the man who died as Derek Anthony Burke, Jr., 34, of Southeast Washington.

The incident happened at 8:42 p.m. in the 2400 block of Alabama Avenue near Suitland Parkway.

Police said the man was found “rolling in the roadway” and a vehicle in the northbound lanes “ran over” him and then fled.

Rescuers came to the scene and the pedestrian was transported to a hospital with trauma-related injuries to the head and body, and was pronounced dead there, police said.

Police said they had no description of the vehicle yet. The crash remains under investigation.

Pedestrian fatalities on roads in the United States have gone up by more than 50 percent in the last decade, according to a recent analysis of federal and state data done by the Governors Highway Safety Association.
