A person is dead after a fiery crash near the U.S. Holocaust Museum in the District.

The driver — whose name has not been released, pending notification of family — was headed south on Raoul Wallenberg Place near Maine Avenue in Southwest Washington. The driver lost control and hit a large tree, according to the U.S. Park Police. The car then caught fire.

Rescuers arrived, they found the person dead inside the car. The crash is under investigation.

Officials said it is not clear if the person died because of the crash or as a result of the fire.
