A robber entered a store just off upper Connecticut Avenue NW one morning last week, pointed a gun at an employee and ordered her to open the cash register.

He took cash and a cellphone from the Chevy Chase Pharmacy in the 3800 block of Northampton Street and fled on foot.

The June 28 holdup was one of 649 gun robberies in the city in the first six months of this year, an increase of 23 percent over the same period last year.

However, in the past two months, the rate of increase has slowed considerably to 8 percent above the same time last year. Last week’s holdup occurred at 10:30 a.m. in a small retail strip around the corner from Connecticut Avenue NW.

Police said they were looking for a black man about 5 feet 6 inches tall with short hair, who appeared to be between 18 and 24 and wore black clothing.
