A 31-year-old woman from Ohio died Monday night after she entered the Potomac River along the Georgetown waterfront, according to D.C. police.

A bystander called police about 5:15 p.m. after seeing the woman, identified as Yulia Vasylkevych, go into the water and not resurface near the 3100 block of K Street NW.

Police and firefighters on boats searched the water and found her more than an hour later, about 6:20 p.m. She was taken to a hospital where police said she was pronounced dead.

A cause of death has not been determined, and police said they are investigating the circumstances. They said Vasylkevych was from West Jefferson, Ohio, a town about 15 miles west of Columbus.
