A man was shot in the hand Saturday morning in Franklin Square Park, drawing a large police response to the downtown expanse in Northwest Washington, according to law enforcement authorities.

Sgt. Anna Rose, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Park Police, said the victim was taken to a hospital. His condition was not immediately known. Police said no arrest has been made.

The shooting occurred shortly before 6 a.m. in the southwest area of the park, which takes up the block between 13th and 14th streets and K and I streets. The park is across the street from The Washington Post.

A motive was not known, Rose said, adding that police “continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.” The park is known for being a gathering place for homeless people.
