A knife-wielding man was shot and critically wounded by a police officer on Route 50 in Anne Arundel County Friday night after the man ignored orders to drop the weapon, authorities said.

The incident occurred after a pedestrian accident had been reported on the highway, near Davidsonville road, according to a county police spokeswoman said. When rescue personnel reached the scene, said Sgt. Jacklyn Davis, a man “came at them with a knife.”

She said a county police officer and a state trooper quickly arrived at the scene, encountered a man with a knife. Commands were issued for the man to drop the knife, she said, but the or the man held on to it.

The county officer fired a single shot, the spokeswoman said.

The man was hit and remained in critical condition late Friday night, she said

The eastbound lanes of Route 50 were closed after the incident. It was not immediately clear when they would reopen. .

No pedestrian accident was found, Davis said.
