A 39-year-old man from Connecticut was arrested Friday afternoon after crossing a temporary barrier in front of the White House, according to D.C. police and the Secret Service.

The incident occurred about 12:50 p.m. in the 1600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

A. D.C. police report identified the suspect as John Yater, of Dayville, Conn. He was charged with unlawful entry.

In a statement, the Secret Service said the man crossed the barrier on the north side of Pennsylvania Avenue. A police report says there was a sign on the fence that said, “Restricted Area, DO NOT ENTER.”
