It was not anything like the conventional knock on the door that occurred in the Kalorama neighborhood of Northwest Washington over the weekend. When police inspected they said they found three bullet holes.

Police said they showed up about 2 p.m. Sunday in the 2100 block of S Street NW. According to a brief account provided Monday, police went there after a caller told them that someone had fired through the front door.

Whoever had fired was nobody the caller knew, police said.

When police arrived, they found the bullet holes.

They said the matter remained under investigation. More information is being collected, they said.

The 2100 block of S Street is just west of Connecticut Avenue and north of Florida Avenue, and is lined with homes that are rich in architectural detail and bespeak quiet elegance.
