A small plane crashed in north-central Virginia on Tuesday, killing two people, according to police.

On Wednesday, officials identified the two people killed in the crash as the pilot, Charles Neal Caldwell, 57, of Apopka, Fla., and the passenger as John Joseph Quinn Jr., 81, of Culpeper, Va.

A spokesman for the Virginia State Police said the department received a call about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday concerning a small aircraft that crashed in the 1000 block of Tinder Lane in Orange County.

The single-engine plane, a Jihlavan KP-5 ASA light sport aircraft, crashed in the roadway at the intersection of Tinder and Ridge Field lanes, according to a statement from the department. That intersection is in Rhoadesville, Va., about 70 miles northwest of Richmond.

State police, along with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
