The man and two teenagers used the popular messaging app Kik to con payments from a man told he must hand over cash to avoid being identified to police for soliciting a prostitute, authorities allege.
The scam, which police say began in January, involved a Sterling, Va., man and two teenagers who contacted a 25-year-old Landsdowne, Va., man via the app.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office arrested Tuesday and charged Yogesh K. Sharma, 56, with felony conspiracy to commit extortion. He is in jail without bond.
The victim gave money to Sharma and the two teenagers several times and at different locations, police said. In February, the victim reached out to law enforcement.
Sharma and the two teenagers — whose names were not released because they are minors — were taken into custody. The teens were taken to the county’s juvenile detention center and faces charges of extortion.
Authorities said they believe there are additional victims and ask people to call 571-258-3043.
