A 16-year-old girl who was shot in the head inside an apartment Thursday afternoon in the Ivy City neighborhood was wounded in a domestic dispute, D.C. police said Friday.

The victim, whose identity has not been made public, remained in critical condition at a hospital Friday, and police said her wounds are life-threatening. Police had detained a person outside the apartment but said no charges have been filed.

Friday evening, police publicized a photo of a white 2017 Kia Sorento SUV that was being sought in the shooting. Police said the vehicle has Maryland license plates 1DD2833 and may have damage to its front end.

The shooting occurred shortly after 3 p.m. in the small complex of four-story brick apartments in the 1000 block of Mount Olivet Road NE, a short distance from New York Avenue and next to the Gallaudet University campus.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said Thursday that there was no forced entry to the apartment and that no gun had been recovered.

The area used to be mostly warehouses, food distributors and large nightclubs but has become one of the District's new destination areas for residents. A collection of new apartment buildings, restaurants and a distillery are about five blocks from where the killing occurred.

Correction: An earlier version of this report said police were looking for a 2018 Kia Sorento SUV. The model year is actually 2017.
