A 17-year-old driver was killed after he lost control of a vehicle, went off the road and hit a ditch in Prince William County.

The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 12500 block of Purcell Road in the Manassas area.

Local police said the Woodbridge teen was driving an Acura northwest on Purcell Road at a “high rate of speed” and lost control of the vehicle. After going off the road, the car hit the ditch and then rolled several times, police said.

Police said the driver was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. A passenger who was wearing a seat belt had minor injuries, according to police.

Officials said friends who were in another vehicle behind the Acura took the driver to a hospital, where he later died.

Police did not identify the victim because of a Virginia law that prohibits the release of a minor’s name.
