A male student at a D.C. public charter high school was fatally stabbed Tuesday near the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro station in Northeast Washington, according to D.C. police.

The victim, 16, was stabbed in the chest and died at a hospital, D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said. He was attacked about 4:35 p.m. in the 1300 block of Second Street NE, near a hotel and restaurants.

Commuters streamed past the crime scene.

According to witnesses, it appeared that “there was a large group of teens” in the area, Newsham said.

After the stabbing, the chief said, “they scattered.”

The group was so large that no specific description of any suspect was available, he said.

No motive was known for the stabbing, and Newsham said no weapon was recovered.

“It’s sad when we lose one of our kids,” the chief said.

Although the student’s name was not released, officials at KIPP DC College Preparatory high school said he was enrolled there. “We are heartbroken,” said Susan Schaeffler, chief executive of the charter school network KIPP DC.

The stabbing occurred about a mile from the school, which is on Brentwood Parkway NE.
