More than two dozen traffic tickets were issued in Montgomery County one evening last week as part of an effort to crack down on illegal street racing, the state police said.

Police said they responded Tuesday evening to citizen complaints of cars gathered near Interstate 270 and Route 124 in the Gaithersburg area.

As part of a joint effort with the Gaithersburg police, officers made 28 traffic stops, issued 28 citations and 16 warnings, the state police said,

They said they also issued two citations for disturbing the peace that involved modified exhaust systems.

In addition, the police said, 10 safety equipment repair orders were issued.
