A man was fatally shot and a woman wounded after a dispute outside a townhouse Monday in District Heights, police said.

The investigation into the double shooting shut down schools and roads in the area when police set up a barricade because they suspected the gunman had run into the townhouse after the shooting, Prince George’s County police said. After entering the home, police said the suspect was not inside; they lifted the barricade around 5 p.m. and were still searching for the suspect.

The incident unfolded about 1:40 p.m. in the 5200 block of Daventry Terrace. Police said two groups of people who knew one another got into a fight, and someone fired a gun. A woman was shot in “an extremity” and a man was shot and taken to a hospital in grave condition where he later died, police said.

The investigation placed Drew Freeman Middle School and Suitland High School on lockdown around 2 p.m. Students at the middle school were released shortly before 4 p.m., and the lockdown of the high school was lifted around 5 p.m., after police declared the townhouse clear.

Authorities set up a barricade around Daventry Terrace “out of an abundance of caution” because witnesses had reported seeing the gunman run back into the townhouse, Donelan said.

A spokeswoman for the county school system said that the lockdown began about 2 p.m. and that parents should have received notification from the transportation office. Students at Suitland had to leave from the back of the school near the Sussex Square apartments when the lockdown there was lifted because of the investigation, police said.
