Two people were shot and critically wounded on a basketball court Tuesday evening in Columbia Heights, and in a separate incident, a 22-year-old man was stabbed early Wednesday after leaving a party near the campus of George Washington University, according to D.C. police.
The incidents were part of a spate of violence across the District in which at least nine people were wounded in seven shootings between Monday night and Wednesday afternoon. One man, shot Tuesday morning, has died. It does not appear that the incidents are related, police said, and all remain under investigation.
In addition to the shootings, D.C. police reported seven robberies on Wednesday between midnight and dawn, four involving guns. Three of the armed robberies occurred in Northwest — in the 1700 block of Columbia Road, the 900 block of Massachusetts Avenue and the 1300 block of 12th Street.
Late Wednesday afternoon, police reported a disorderly crowd outside the Columbia Heights Metro station, and that an officer had been assaulted. More than a dozen officers responded, but further details were not immediately available.
Tuesday’s double shooting in Columbia Heights is raising concerns among residents. It occurred about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday on a basketball court in the 1400 block of Girard Street NW, near 14th Street, a major artery that was closed for several hours during the evening rush hour.
Police said two men, both 39, were shot multiple times and taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Both were listed in critical condition, but they were conscious and breathing at the scene, according to police. One listed addresses in Northeast and Southeast Washington; the other lives in Northwest.
Police had made no arrests as of Wednesday morning. The basketball court is a block from the Girard Street Playground, the site of a July 2015 shootout between rival gangs that sent panicked children and parents scrambling for safety. No one was wounded in that shooting. The park is at the northwest end of Girard Street, closer to 15th Street.
Few details were made public about Tuesday evening’s shooting on the basketball court, which is located closer to 14th Street. That shooting occurred three blocks south of an apartment building in the 2900 block of 14th Street where police said a man was fatally shot inside a residence about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. Police said there is no indication that the incidents are related. The victim from the apartment building shooting has been identified as Devonte Crawford, 20, of Northwest.
Police responded to several other shootings on Wednesday, none of which was described as life-threatening. A man was shot shortly after midnight outside a residence near Nationals Park and another man was wounded about 1:30 p.m. in Southeast. A juvenile who was wounded by gunfire on Stanton Road SE told police he had shot himself, authorities said, but detectives believe evidence does not support his account. And in Anacostia on Wednesday afternoon, police said someone shot at a building used by the U.S. Park Police.
The stabbing near George Washington University occurred about 3:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of I Street NW, a block from the Foggy Bottom Metro station.
A police report said the victim was leaving a party when he was accosted by a man. During the altercation, police said, the victim reported feeling a sharp pain and collapsed on the sidewalk.
The victim’s cousin took the injured man into a residence to clean up his blood and discovered that the man had been stabbed, the report said. Police said the victim was then taken to George Washington University Hospital suffering from stab wounds to the abdomen, side, chest and left arm.
His condition could not immediately be learned on Wednesday.
