A vehicle went off a road and plunged into the Anacostia River on Tuesday afternoon in Southeast Washington, according to the D.C. fire department.

Vito Maggiolo, a spokesman for the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, said the driver managed to get out of the vehicle near the 11th Street Bridge and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The vehicle sank.

The incident occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Anacostia Drive, 500 feet north of the bridge. Anacostia Drive runs through Anacostia Park, along the river.

Maggiolo said the driver was the only person in the vehicle. Firefighters and other authorities searched the area to make sure and concluded that no one was missing.

It unclear how the car went off the road. Fire officials said the driver’s injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
