A 24-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed in Alexandria.

Police in Fairfax County said the incident happened around 11 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Telegraph and Franconia roads in the Alexandria section of the county.

An initial investigation found that Fatima Del Carmen Alvarez Romero, of Alexandria, rode her bike in a crosswalk as she crossed Telegraph Road on the south side of the Franconia Road intersection, police said, when she was struck by a vehicle.

Police said the vehicle was headed north on Telegraph Road and “had a green traffic signal.”

Alvarez Romero was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle stayed on the scene.

Authorities said in a statement that “speed and alcohol are not factors in the crash.”

It remains under investigation.
