Virginia State Police have identified the pilot of a small private plane that crashed Saturday shortly after taking off from Front Royal Airport in Warren County, Va.

Authorities said Steven B. Zaboji, 76, of Reston, was piloting the Piper Pawnee that took off about 1:35 p.m. with a glider in tow. After the glider safely disconnected, the aircraft had trouble, crashed near the airport onto private property at the 1700 block of Ridgeway Road and caught fire, state police spokeswoman Corinne N. Geller said in a statement.

Virginia State Police Trooper S.R. Marks responded at 1:39 p.m., and Zaboji died at the scene, police said. The glider safely landed after the crash, which remains under investigation, police said. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were expected to provide updates Sunday.
