Merry Thomas’s friend wasn’t a pro when it came to playing the lottery. So when the two finished their overnight shifts ,Thomas offered to show her how.

They went to a Fredericksburg, Va., grocery store and bought tickets. Turns out it was Thomas’s lucky day.

She won $1 million. Her friend won $12.

The two bought the tickets at a Giant Food store on Town and Country Road. Thomas showed her friend how to use the self-service machine and how to scan the ticket after she scratched it to see if she’d won, according to Virginia lottery officials.

“I’ve been freaking out since then,” Thomas told lottery officials after she won. “I just feel so fortunate. It’s unbelievable.”

Her friend teased her and told lottery officials that Thomas “turned into a puddle” after she won, overcome with emotion and laughter at her luck.

Thomas played the lottery game called “20X the Money.” She will receive a one-time cash payout of $630,915, before taxes. The Giant store got $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.

And the million-dollar question for every lottery winner: What are you going to do with your winnings?

Thomas told lottery officials she had no immediate plans.

On Wednesday, she could not be immediately reached for comment.
