A 39-year-old Alexandria woman who was assaulted outside a convenience store last week has died, police said Friday.
Fedelia Montiel Benitiez died Thursday, according to police. She was found unconscious on the ground outside a building near the Mark Center on Seminary Road shortly before midnight July 10. She was taken to a hospital.
Robert Coleman, a 26-year-old city resident, was arrested the day after the assault and charged with malicious wounding. The possibility of additional charges is being investigated, police said.
Police did not provide details on a possible motive but said they did not believe Benitiez and Coleman knew each other.
Benitiez’s death is the third homicide in the city this year.
