A 19-year-old mother left her 9-month-old baby unattended in a stroller in the middle of a road in Woodbridge, Va., as she chased a man with whom she was having a dispute, police said.

The incident unfolded about 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the 2700 block of Potomac Mills Circle in Prince William County.

Prince William police said they were called to investigate a domestic dispute and after investigation found that Luz Anabel Fernandez, who lives in Arlington, and a 28-year-old Alexandria man had gotten into a verbal altercation. The fight escalated, and at one point, she allegedly bit and assaulted the man, police said.

When police officers arrived, Fernandez was detained and later arrested, officials said. She was charged with domestic assault and battery and felony child neglect.

The child was not harmed and was released into the custody of a family member.

A court date is pending for Fernandez, who is being held without bond.
