A 16-year-old girl was shot in the head and critically injured inside an apartment Thursday afternoon in the Ivy City neighborhood of Northeast Washington, according to D.C. police.

Police Chief Peter Newsham said officers detained a man outside the apartment complex in the 1000 block of Mount Olivet Road NE, and detectives were questioning him as a person of interest. No arrest had been made as of Thursday evening.

Authorities did not describe a possible motive but said there was no forced entry into the apartment and a gun had not been found. Police said the woman was in critical condition at an area hospital.

The shooting occurred shortly after 3 p.m. in the small complex of four-story brick apartments located a short distance from New York Avenue and next to the campus of Gallaudet University.

The area used to be mostly warehouses, food distributors and large nightclubs, but has now become one of the District's new destination areas for residents. A collection of new apartments, restaurants and a distillery are located about five blocks from where the shooting occurred.

Police had initally described the victim as an adult, but later confirmed that she was a juvenile.
