Region finally sees typical summer temperatures

Just about halfway through the hot weather season, the true Washington summer showed up Saturday. The heat was normal, but the humidity curtailed enjoyment.

The afternoon high temperature at Reagan National Airport was 88 degrees, one degree below the normal high for the date. The morning low was 71, exactly normal. The average temperature for the entire day at National Airport rounded out to 80, which was normal for July 14.

At Dulles International Airport, the day’s average temperature was 77, which was also precisely normal for the date.

The normal readings came almost at the midway point in the June, July and August period that meteorologists consider to be summer.

Saturday’s typical summer temperatures were nothing like the spell earlier this month when daily highs were at least 100 and the daily average was at least 90.

Yet that did not make Saturday completely comfortable.

Thunderstorms caused flooding in spots, and a sticky mugginess enveloped many sections. A comment on the Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang site summed up the sensation.

It felt, the comment said, “like someone didn’t turn on the bathroom fan.”
