Fairfax County police officers shot and killed a man in Springfield Thursday following a call for a domestic dispute at a residence, police said.

Officers responded to a residence in the 7900 block of Pebble Brook Court around 2:40 p.m., police said. A man was reportedly alone inside the home with multiple weapons.

Officers negotiated with the man, who would not leave the house or let officers inside, police said. Around 3:30 p.m., at least one shot was fired and the man barricaded himself inside the home, police said.

Police could not immediately provide details about who fired the shot, how many shots were fired or the circumstances of the shooting.

Officers used a hostage rescue vehicle to enter the home around 4:30 p.m., police said. They found the man dead from a gunshot wound.

Police did not release the man’s name, pending notification of next of kin. Police said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave, pending the completion of an internal investigation, police said.
