A retired police officer shot and killed an armed man who went to his door in Calvert County intent on robbery Sunday night, the county sheriff’s office said.

The shooting in Huntingtown followed a Feb. 12 incident in which an off-duty Alexandria sheriff’s deputy killed a man who broke into his Fort Washington home.

In Sunday’s incident, the sheriff’s office said, the homeowner heard banging on his door, and after getting a handgun, opened it to find two people. One brandished a weapon — which authorities did not describe — and both were acting aggressively.

The homeowner fired, and Kevin W. Chapman, 38, of Lusby was killed, the sheriff’s office said. April Lynn Stewart, 39, who was found at Chapman’s house, was arrested and charged with armed robbery, authorities said.

A sheriff’s office spokesman said he thought the former officer, whom he did not identify, had retired from the D.C. police.
