JBG Companies of Chevy Chase has received the Maryland governor’s 2011 “Smart, Green and Growing” award for a mixed use development that the company is building at the Twinbrook Metrorail station in Rockville.

Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) said in a statement that the Twinbrook Station development is a “great example” of focusing residential, office and retail growth around transit stations to limit sprawl, create more walkable communities and reduce driving.

The development, called Twinbrook Station, has opened its first residential and retail phase, the governor’s office said. At full build out, more than 26 acres of what is now mostly commuter parking lots along Metrorail’s Red Line will be developed in a joint venture with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).

Montgomery County recently revamped its growth plans to focus high-rise developments around transit stations.
