Back-to-school sales tax breaks return in August, giving shoppers in Maryland and Virginia several days in which to buy school supplies and other items without a tariff.
In Virginia, the sales tax holiday begins Friday and continues for three days for shoes and clothing items that cost less than $100 each, and many school and office supplies such as notebooks and pens costing less than $20 will be exempt from the 5.3 percent state and local sales tax, or 6 percent for much of Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads. There is no limit to the quantity of items, and they don't have to be for school use.
Maryland’s tax break begins Aug. 10 and continues through Aug. 16 for shoes and clothing items costing $100 or less..
The District of Columbia no longer offers a sales tax holiday.
