Shooting leaves one man dead in NW

One man was killed and another wounded in a shooting early Saturday near a Florida Avenue NW service station, police said.

Police identified the man who was killed in the unit block of the Avenue as Freddy Bernard Hawkins, 28, of Northeast.

Police spokesma n Araz Alali ssaid Justine Wilson, 20, of Southeast was charged with second-degree murder while armed and assault with intent to kill.

The arrest followed a car chase, police said. No motive was disclosed.

Officer suspended after crash, DUI

A Prince George’s County police officer has been suspended after he reportedly lost control of his unmarked police cruiser and was charged with driving under the influence in Virginia, authorities said.

Prince George’s police said Cpl. Rodney Lewis , of the investigative division, was seriously injured Friday about 2:45 a.m., when his car hit a wall on Interstate 495 near the American Legion Memorial Bridge in Fairfax County, He was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.

Lewis was not on duty or working as a law enforcement officer when he was charged, police said.

The 12-year veteran has been suspended with pay, and police are investigating.

Construction mishap causes delays on I-95

Traffic was disrupted on Interstate 95 in Prince William County on Saturday when a construction accident pulled down power lines onto the southbound lanes, authorities said.

The mishap occurred about 11:40 a.m. south of Joplin Road , police said. County resident
Michele Hickman said vehicles were stuck for about 90 minutes. Dominion Virginia Power spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson said a backhoe in the median lane pulled the wires down.
