Missing Md. girl is found unharmed

The 11-year-old Maryland girl who was the subject of an Amber Alert was found unharmed Friday night, authorities said.

Caitlyn Virts and her father, Timothy Virts, were found in a motel in Florence, S.C., Baltimore County police said.

Police said the father was charged earlier Friday in a warrant in the death of the girl’s mother, Bobbie Jo Cortez, of Dundalk, Md.

St. Ann’s Academy closing at year’s end

St. Ann’s Academy, a private Catholic elementary and middle school that has been part of its Northwest Washington community for decades, will close at the end of this academic year because of declining enrollment and a large budget gap.

“Unfortunately, St. Ann’s parish can no longer support its school mission and assume or guarantee the school’s growing deficit,” Reverend Monsignor Godfrey Mosley, pastor of St. Ann’s Church, wrote to parents.

Gunfire wounds 2 in Shaw neighborhood

Two men were shot and seriously wounded Friday night in the Shaw area of Northwest Washington, police said.

The shooting occurred about 8:45 p.m. at 5th and Q streets NW. One man’s wounds appeared critical, authorities said.

Prince George’s judge delays water shut-off

A Prince George’s County judge has postponed the scheduled water shut-off at a troubled condominium complex in Temple Hills, preventing the property from being condemned.

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, citing outstanding bills, had planned to shut off water to the Lynnhill Condominiums Monday.

Last week, a temporary order was issued to keep the water on. The Lynnhill management company paid $25,000 to the WSSC on Tuesday, a utility spokesman said.

Police identify 2 men killed fleeing officer

Police have identified two men who were killed in a Merrifield crash Monday that occurred after an officer tried to stop the vehicle, police said.

Eduin J. G. Mejia, 27, and Orlin M. N. Hernandez, 20, both of Fairfax, were killed when Mejia hit a tree on Hilltop Road near Old Lee Highway shortly before 2 a.m. police said. An officer had tried to pull Mejia over for suspected drunken driving, but he sped off, police said.
