A Suitland man is charged with attempted murder after allegedly assaulting a child in his care, authorities said.
Prince George’s County police arrested 26-year-old Clifton Edward Bernard Wednesday morning after receiving a report of an unresponsive child at Bernard’s home, in the 3800 block of Swann Road.
The 2-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital with several injuries including head trauma and remains in critical condition, police said.
According to police, Bernard is in a relationship with the boy’s biological mother. During an interview with detectives, he admitted to assaulting the the child, police said. Police did not release the name of the victim or his mother.
Bernard has been charged with attempted murder, first- and second-degree child abuse, and first- and second-degree assault. He is being held at the Department of Correction on a no-bond status, police said.
