Suspect is charged in slaying of 16-year-old

A 16-year-old was found fatally shot early Sunday outside a hotel in the Vienna area, and a suspect has been arrested, Fairfax County police said.

Gerard Gomez, of the Mount Vernon area, was found about 2 a.m. on a sidewalk next to the Residence Inn Tysons Corner on Westwood Center Drive, police said.

They said Jose Alberto Blanco-Calzadilla, 23, whose address on Woodward Avenue was also in the Mount Vernon area, was charged with second-degree murder.

The police said Blanco-Calzadilla turned himself in on Sunday afternoon.

Mount Vernon High School Principal Nardos King said Gomez was a junior at the school. In a message to parents and staff, King wrote that counselors and crisis responders would be available at the school on Monday.

“Gerard was very well liked by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed,” King wrote. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
