A third corpse flower plant bloomed Monday at the U.S. Botanic Garden, making three blooms of the exotic and smelly plant in little more than a week, a coincidence that the garden staff considered to be extremely unusual.

Garden officials said they thought it was the first time in North America that any place exhibiting the plants had three blooming at the same time. The first of the three reached full bloom on Aug 20.

The garden said it would remain open until 10 p.m. Monday to permit viewing.
