Cost of flying from Washington up 10 percent

Ticket prices for passengers flying from Washington’s three major airports increased by more than 10 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, keeping pace with the cost of flying nationwide as airlines grappled with rising fuel costs.

Calculations released by the Department of Transportation on Monday showed that regional ticket prices were highest at Dulles International Airport and lowest at Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport.

The difference in average ticket price between the two, and Reagan National Airport, primarily was a reflection of the service they provide.

Dulles, with an average round-trip price of $474, is the region’s busiest airport for international destinations.

Reagan, where the average was $381, is limited to domestic service.

BWI, where the average ticket was $322, has international flights, but the airport is dominated by low-cost Southwest Airlines.

The DOT said the national average for tickets was $368, a 10 percent increase over the previous year. It listed Cincinnati (average $502) as the most expensive city to fly from, and Atlantic City ($189) the least costly. In listing eight major urban centers, DOT said Houston’s airports were most expensive ($418), while Chicago’s ($348) were cheapest.
