Two killed early Friday in Beltsville accident

Two people were killed early Friday in Beltsville when a car collided with a tow truck and caught fire. Another person was seriously injured.

The accident happened at about 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Route 1 and Harford Avenue, according to a spokesman for the Maryland State Police’s College Park barrack.

The car was traveling southbound “at a high rate of speed,” the spokesman said, and struck a tow truck traveling northbound.

The vehicle’s driver and a passenger were killed. The driver of the tow truck is in “serious condition, but doing okay,” the spokesman said.

Route 1 reopened at about 9 a.m. after being closed for a number of hours in both directions between Powder Mill Road and Prince George’s Avenue.
