UMd student was not robbed after all, officials say

It turns out that the University of Maryland student who reported that he was beaten and robbed after leaving a bar near campus was not robbed after all, authorities said. But he was beaten, they said.

Originally, Prince George’s County police said the student was attacked early Friday by two men he had met in a bar a short distance from campus.. Police said the men followed him, beat and kicked him, causing him to lose consciousness briefly. They said he awoke to find his cell phone and wallet had been stolen. His injuries were described as minor.

Citing additional investigation, police said this week that the incident had followed an altercation inside the bar, and continued outside, where the victim was assaulted. Neither the wallet nor the cell phone were taken, police said. They said it was determined that they had been misplaced.

It appeared from the new account that only one assailant may have been involved.Police said they would continue to investigate the assault.
