Va. man dies in sand tunnel collapse while at the North Carolina Outer Banks

A Virginia man was killed Monday in the collapse of a sand tunnel at a beach in North Carolina, authorities said.

The man, David Frasier, 49, lived in the Fredericksburg area, said Cyndy M. Holda, a spokeswoman for the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

She said the collapse occurred while he was inside a sand tunnel, trying to connect two deep holes.

She said he was buried in five to six feet of sand.

When rescuers arrived, he was being pulled out of the sand but was unresponsive, she said.

Efforts to resuscitate him failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene, Holda said.
